Vintage Newness: The Row by Mary-Kate and Ashley
It's official, Mary-Kate and Ashley are selling their research collection!
Their eponymous brand, The Row was established in 2006 and is comprised with timeless ready-to-wear garments and accessories which champion the aesthetic of minimalism. In their Fall 2020 womenwear's collection the garments represent the intersection of masculine and feminine forms. This is shown through the use of layering and the contrast between the fitted, tailored pieces and the heavier, oversized garments. The vantage point of their collections is the celebration between combining masculine and feminine forms together. It is therefore intriguing to see what research inspired their designs.
Fall 2020 Womenswear Collection by The Row
All of the designers who influenced their collections are represented on the Galerie subsection of their online store and include the likes of: Comme des Garçons, Pierre Cardin, Chanel, John Galliano and Issey Miyake. It's beautiful to see the translation of vintage garments from the 1970s and early 2000s, into contemporary designs for today. For example, Rei Kawakubo, the founder of Comme des Garçons, clearly influenced the overt and distinguishable tailoring that is found in the 2020 collections at the Row. Likewise, the feminine, circular details found in the 1970s collection produced by Chanel are recognisable in the embellishments found in the coats, blazers and shirts.
