ABOUT

INDERA TAMARA

PHOTOGRAPHER + WRITER

I am a mixed race woman who experiences the socialisation of both whiteness and blackness.

I am fascinated in exploring the relationship between the two oppositions.

The theme of twoness is subsequently reoccurring through approach to writing and creating photographs.

Through playful yet serious gestures, I intend to create a new way of seeing.

In my work I create narratives which are inspired by diverse social discourses, representational theory, identity and fashion culture. As part of my current practice the philosophy Afrofuturism has been a highly influential space. The movement seeks to liberate the social experience of black people by creating a positive future which is subversive to hegemonic stereotypes in society. This became the subject matter in my dissertation at Camberwell College of Arts where I proposed the first mixed race gaze of Afrofuturism.
